Gift of appreciated securities
A gift of appreciated securities such as stocks, mutual funds, and bonds can provide attractive benefits. An outright gift of long-term appreciated securities (securities held for more than a year) avoids capital gains taxes and in most cases, the donor obtains a charitable income tax deduction equal to the market value of the securities. For gifts of securities, your gift is fully deductible∗ for up to 30% of your adjusted gross income and, like gifts of cash, may be carried forward for five additional years.
Real Estate gifts to NRI
You can make a gift of commercial or residential real estate to NRI and receive substantial financial benefits. In some cases you may want to give the property outright to support the purposes of NRI and qualify for a charitable income tax deduction based on the appraised value of the property. In other cases you may use a home or land you no longer want or need to fund a life income gift. You can also arrange to give your home to NRI while retaining the right to live in it for the entirety of your life.
Estate gifts to NRI
Consider making a gift to NRI through a revocable living trust or in your will. You can provide for a specific amount, or a percentage of your total estate. A gift to NRI through your trust or will makes a statement after you are gone about the priorities of your life, and helps to ensure that your gift will continue. NRI can offer you estate planning services free of charge. Please contact NRI's Director Laila Mickelwait, for more information.
Life income gifts to NRI
A donor may make a gift to NRI and receive direct financial benefits. The benefits include an income for life for the donor and/or the donor's spouse and a charitable income tax deduction∗, all while exercising good stewardship over your assets. NRI offers several options including the charitable gift annuity and the deferred gift annuity.
A Charitable Gift Annuity
Charitable gift annuities are a solid investment in the future of NRI and provide a guaranteed life income. A gift annuity is a contract between the donor and NRI that provides advantages for both. The donor makes a gift to NRI and receives the following benefits:
Guaranteed fixed payments for life, a portion of which is nontaxableCharitable income tax deduction for a portion of the giftReduced capital gains taxesSupport of a program at NRI, or of the NRI EndowmentThe payout rate on an annuity is based on the age of the donor at the time the gift is made. NRI follows the policies of the American Council on Gift Annuities.Charitable gift annuities may be funded with cash, securities, or property. Payouts may be made annually, semiannually, or quarterly. The checks are issued and sent directly to the donor or to a specified bank account. Each annuity is backed by the assets of NRI
.
A Deferred Gift Annuity
A deferred gift annuity is similar to a charitable gift annuity, except that the payments are deferred to a future date. In addition, the donor obtains a substantial charitable income tax deduction in the year the gift is made.
A donor may defer payments to years when income is needed more, such as in retirement. A deferred gift annuity is an excellent way to make a gift and receive a charitable income tax deduction while providing income for the future.
